Module 1: Work-at-Height Safety & Legal Compliance

  • Overview of WAHR 2005, LOLER 1998, PUWER 1998, and HSE OC 282/31
  • Risk assessments and escape route planning
  • Employer and employee legal responsibilities

Module 2: Equipment Overview & Pre-Use Inspections

  • PPE requirements (Full-body harness, helmet, gloves, protective footwear)
  • Rope escape system components (rope, anchor points, descenders, carabiners)
  • Equipment inspection following LOLER & PUWER standards

Module 3: Self-Evacuation Techniques

  • Step-by-step emergency descent using pre-packed rope systems
  • Safe anchoring and correct harness attachment
  • Controlled braking and descent posture to ensure a safe landing

Module 4: MEWP & VNA Escape Procedures (If Applicable)

  • Challenges of evacuating from powered access platforms
  • Proper attachment to anchor points for escape
  • Avoiding obstacles and maintaining a controlled descent

Module 5: Assisted Rescue Procedures (If Applicable)

  • How to assist a colleague in distress
  • Securely lowering an incapacitated casualty using a rope rescue system
  • Proper use of rescue strops and harness attachments

Module 6: Emergency Response & Incident Management

  • Handling equipment entanglement or failure
  • Managing worker panic and high-stress scenarios
  • Post-incident reporting & debriefing procedures

Assessment & Certification

  • Theory Assessment – Multiple-choice test covering safety legislation, risk assessments, and equipment use (Pass mark: 80%)
  • Practical Assessment – Learners must successfully demonstrate:
    • Self-evacuation using a pre-packed rope system
    • Anchor point selection & correct use of PPE
    • Assisted rescue techniques (if applicable)
    • Emergency escape from MEWPs/VNAs (where relevant)
  • Certification Validity: 1 Year (Annual refresher required)
