The Level 2 Diploma in Network Construction Operations (Gas) – Escape, Locate and Repair (ELR Pathway) is the nationally recognised qualification for gas operatives who identify and resolve escapes on the live gas network.

Who Is This Qualification For?

This route is ideal for gas professionals already working in ELR roles, such as:

• Escape operatives working on emergency response
• Engineers locating and repairing leaks on low or medium pressure networks
• Utility operatives responsible for fault resolution, pressure testing, and safe reinstatement
• GIRS-registered contractors and Tier 1 operatives needing certification for compliance

You must be currently employed in a gas ELR role. This qualification assesses real performance — it’s not classroom-based or simulated.

What Does the NCO ELR Pathway Cover?

You’ll complete:

1. Core Mandatory Units (Group A)

Including:

• ✅ Health and safety
• ✅ Location of underground services
• ✅ Using powered tools and electrofusion jointing
• ✅ Safe working on the highway
• ✅ Trenching and excavation

2. Escape, Locate and Repair Pathway Units (Group C3)

Choose based on your job role:

• ✅ Test for gas escapes
• ✅ Risk management during escapes
• ✅ Analyse and locate leaks
• ✅ Restore gas assets after repair

3. Optional Units (Group E)

Selected to match your duties, such as:

• ✅ Butt fusion jointing
• ✅ Decommissioning and abandonment
• ✅ Testing of mains or services

All tasks map to national occupational standards and align with EUIAS and Ofqual guidance.

How Does the Assessment Work?

We assess your skills through your real job. You don’t attend training or assessments in a centre. Instead:

• You complete task-based assignments at work
• You upload photos, records, site logs, and test results
• We assess your evidence remotely via QualsDirect
• You receive written feedback and support within 10 working days
• One unit at a time — structured, manageable, and flexible

This is 100% work-based, paperless, and nationally approved.

Entry Requirements

To enrol on this qualification, you must:

• You must be employed in an ELR gas role.
• You must have regular access to leak detection, repair, and recommissioning work.
• Your supervisor must support you for witness evidence (if needed).
• You must have access to a mobile device or PC for uploading to QualsDirect.

No prior qualifications are required. This route is built around experience and performance.

Typical Duration

• Minimum: 6 months
• Typical completion: 6–12 months
• Qualification Time: ~500 hours (including evidence gathering)
