HSG47 Training – Underground Cable Avoidance Services

What is HSG47?

HSG47 is a key health and safety guide from the HSE. Its purpose is to outline safe digging methods. This applies when working near underground services. Our training makes sure operatives learn these guidelines. It covers using CAT and Genny devices effectively.

About the HSG47 Training Course

The HSG47 training is a two-day, EUSR-accredited training programme designed for anyone working near or around high voltage (HV) underground cables.

This course is a replacement for the HV Cat and Genny Substations course, which is being phased out in May 2025. From that date, National Grid will require all substation-based workers to complete the Substations Fitter course. For everyone else working in or near HV cable environments, this HV HSG47 course is the an acceptable alternative.

Who Should Attend?

This HSG47 Training course is ideal for:

  • Utility and civil engineering workers involved in excavation or cable detection

  • Contractors accessing National Grid or DNO infrastructure

  • Those who previously completed the HV Substations course

  • Site supervisors, groundworkers, and cable engineers

What You’ll Learn

This course teaches delegates how to:

  • Work safely in environments where HV underground cables are present
  • Understand and apply HSG47 guidance and safety legislation

Use Cable Avoidance Tools (CAT) and Signal Generators (Genny) in all modes:
  • Power mode
  • Radio mode
  • Genny (active) mode
  • Depth estimation (where applicable)
  • Interpret utility service drawings and records
  • Plan safe systems of work, conduct risk assessments, and excavate safely
  • React to cable strikes and emergency scenarios

Course Format

✅ Duration: 2 days (Delivered weekly, every Wednesday and Thursday)

✅ Assessment:

  • A written theory test
  • 1 practical skills assessment

✅ Certification: EUSR registration (valid for 3 years)

✅ Location Options:

  • At our Abercynon Training Centre
  • Or on-site at your location, anywhere in the UK (subject to suitability)

Why This Course Replaces the HV Substations Course

From May 2025, the existing HV Substations course will be withdrawn as part of National Grid’s updated training requirements. Going forward:

✅ Substations Fitter training will apply to personnel working inside substations

✅ This HSG47 course becomes the required training for those working near underground HV cables, particularly in excavation, detection, and civils environments

If you or your team previously completed HV Substations training, this is the course you now need to remain compliant.

Key Benefits

✅ Meet National Grid and DNO training requirements ahead of regulatory change

✅ Delivered weekly for maximum flexibility

✅ Available on-site or at our South Wales training centre

✅ EUSR registration ensures recognition across the UK utility and infrastructure sectors

✅ The course includes CAT and Genny training, meeting HSG47 standards.
