Confined Space – EUIAS – FAQs

FAQS

Have Any Questions?

What is confined space training and who needs it?

Confined space training teaches you how to work safely in enclosed or partially enclosed areas where there’s a risk of serious injury from hazardous substances, low oxygen, or restricted access. It’s essential for workers in utilities, construction, water, telecoms, and manufacturing.

What is the difference between low, medium and high risk confined space training?
  • Low risk: simple entry, minimal hazards, constant ventilation
  • Medium risk: known hazards (e.g. gas or liquids), escape provision, top-person control
  • High risk: full breathing apparatus (BA), significant hazards, complex entry and emergency planning

Your role and working conditions will determine which course you need.

Is your confined space training accredited?

Yes. All our confined space courses are fully accredited by EUIAS (Energy & Utility Independent Assessment Service). This means they meet national safety and compliance standards and are recognised across UK industry.

Do I need a confined space certificate for my job?

If you enter, supervise or manage work in confined spaces — yes. Most utility contractors, construction firms and local authorities require valid confined space certification for site access and compliance.

What does the confined space practical assessment involve?

You’ll complete a live simulated task that includes:

  • Wearing correct PPE (harness, escape set or BA)
  • Gas testing and logging
  • Entry and communication protocols
  • Following an emergency plan if triggered

Your assessor will guide and observe you based on a set checklist.

Can you deliver confined space training at our site?

Yes. We offer on-site confined space training anywhere in the UK, subject to space and safety requirements. We also have dedicated training centres available.

How long does confined space certification last?

Most EUIAS confined space qualifications are valid for 3 years. After this, you’ll need to refresh your training to stay compliant and continue working on confined space jobs.

What’s the difference between an Entrant and an Entry Controller?
  • Entrant: enters the confined space and performs the task
  • Entry Controller (Top Person): remains outside, supervises, maintains communication, initiates rescue if needed
We offer combined and separate qualifications depending on your role.
Is this training suitable for new starters or only experienced staff?

Our courses are designed for all levels of experience. If you’re new, we provide step-by-step instruction and practice. If you’re experienced, we focus on assessment, compliance and updates to standards.

How do I register for EUSR after completing this course?

We’ll guide you through the process. Once you pass your EUIAS accredited course, we help submit your results to the Energy & Utility Skills Register (EUSR) so you can appear on their national worker database.
