The Level 2 Diploma in NCO Gas Main Layer Pathway is the official industry-recognised qualification for operatives installing and connecting gas mains on the live network.

Who Is This Qualification For?

This route is ideal for gas operatives who:

• Install gas mains in low and medium pressure systems
• Work for GIRS-registered companies, DNOs, or Tier 1 contractors
• Carry out excavation, pipe laying, jointing, and commissioning
• Need to meet compliance standards for Street Works, CSCS or utility frameworks

You must already be working in a suitable role on the gas network. All assessment is based on your live site activity — no simulated training, no mock tasks.

What Does the NCO Gas Main Layer Qualification Cover?

You’ll complete:

1. Group A – Core Mandatory Units

Covering:

• ✅ Health and safety
• ✅ Locating underground services
• ✅ Using powered tools and electrofusion jointing
• ✅ Excavation and safe trench support
• ✅ Highway safety and traffic management

2. Group C1 – Main Layer Units

• ✅ Lay and connect PE gas mains
• ✅ Conduct mains pressure testing
• ✅ Maintain safety and integrity of installations
• ✅ Record and report installation activity

3. Group E – Optional Units (as required for credits)

• ✅ Butt fusion jointing
• ✅ Install gas assets >180mm
• ✅ Decommissioning and asset abandonment

How Does NCO Gas Main Layer Qualification Work?

Entry Requirements

To start this qualification, you must:

• Be employed in a relevant gas main layer role
• Regularly install or connect gas mains (low or medium pressure)
• Have access to tasks like excavation, jointing, testing, and reinstatement
• Be able to provide supervisor witness evidence (if needed)
• Be able to upload work via the QualsDirect e-portfolio system

No previous formal qualifications are required — just real site experience and access to the work.

How Long Will It Take?

• Minimum qualification duration: 6 months
• Typical completion time: 6–12 months
• Total Qualification Time (TQT): approx. 500 hours
• Submission is one unit at a time — fully flexible
• All assessment is done remotely through your live job
