What Is the Level 2 NCO Gas Qualification?

The Level 2 Diploma in NCO Gas Assessment – Gas Pathway is a nationally recognised qualification that proves your competence to work safely and effectively on live gas networks. It is essential for gas operatives involved in:

• Laying gas mains
• Installing gas services
• Responding to gas leaks
• Pressure testing and commissioning

Who Can Apply?

This EUIAS NVQ Gas qualification is for you if:

• You currently work in a gas network construction role
• You’re employed by a utility provider, DNO, or GIRS-registered contractor
• You’re actively carrying out installation, repair, or testing of gas mains/services
• You want to gain a nationally recognised NVQ-style qualification to meet employer or regulatory requirements

Important: This is an assessment-only route. You must already be working on live gas networks. We do not offer classroom training.

What Will You Be Assessed On?

To complete the NCO Gas qualification, you’ll complete:

1. Core Mandatory Units

Covering:

• ✅ Health and safety
• ✅ Locating underground services
• ✅ Using powered tools
• ✅ Electrofusion jointing
• ✅ Excavation and reinstatement

2. One Full Gas Pathway

Choose based on your job role:

• ✅ C1: Gas Main Layer
• ✅ C2: Gas Service Layer
• ✅ C3: Escape, Locate and Repair

3. Optional Units (Group E)

Such as:

• ✅ Pressure testing of gas mains
• ✅ Decommissioning and abandonment
• ✅ Butt fusion jointing (large diameter)

Each unit includes mapped tasks with evidence requirements — all aligned with current National Occupational Standards.

How Does NCO Gas Assessment Work?

We assess you while you work. Everything is completed using QualsDirect, our secure e-portfolio system.

You’ll submit:

• Photos of your work
• Test results and QA records
• Risk assessments and job logs
• Supervisor witness statements
• Short written assignment tasks
• On-site assessor observations where appropriate

Crucially, one unit at a time. Feedback in 10 working days. No delays, no confusion.

Entry Requirements

• You must be employed in a suitable gas network role
• You must have access to relevant tasks (e.g. pipe laying, jointing, testing)
• Supervisor cooperation is required for evidence or statements
• You must be committed to submitting your portfolio work consistently

Notably, no previous qualifications are required. Just proven experience and access to relevant work.

How Long Will It Take?

• Typical duration: 6 to 12 months
• Minimum duration: 6 months
• One unit submitted and assessed at a time
• Total Qualification Time: approx. 460–550 hours

Furthermore, you progress at a pace that suits your site access and work schedules.
